Celebrating “Spring Festival,” also known as the Lunar New Year.

The Yi people are from the south of China and the Mongolians are from the north.

The soldier on the right is putting up “对联” (duì lián), a pair of calligraphy strips put at the entrance of the home with auspicious sayings. The little boy is holding the second of the two.

Behind the boy on the left, you can see another soldier beating a drum in celebration of the “New Spring.”

The two calligraphy strips say: “The Communist Party is the Saving Star,” “Chairman Mao is the Benefactor.”
